Looking for an easy family cycling route in North Devon? The traffic-free ride from Waterside Bike Hire near Braunton to Fremington Quay is one of our favourite recommendations for families, beginners and anyone returning to cycling after a long break.

From Waterside you can join the Tarka Trail without riding on public roads. The route hugs the Taw Estuary, giving you wide-open views and different wildlife to spot as the tide changes. At the halfway point, Fremington Quay rewards children with ice cream and a pirate-ship play park—while adults can enjoy good coffee and some famously large slices of cake.

Route at a glance

  • Start: Waterside Bike Hire, near Braunton
  • Turnaround point: Fremington Quay
  • Approximate return distance: 12 miles
  • Typical riding time: around 45–60 minutes each way
  • Allow: roughly two hours of cycling, plus plenty of time at the quay
  • Terrain: traffic-free and almost completely flat
  • Best suited to: families, beginners and relaxed leisure riders

The timings are only a guide. Families using trailers, tagalongs or child seats often turn the ride into a relaxed half-day outing. There is no need to rush when the views and refreshment stop are such a big part of the day.

Is the route really flat?

This is one of the questions we hear most often, and the answer is yes: the route is essentially flat. The only noticeable incline is the approach to the bridge. We normally recommend using the newer bridge, and the view from the top makes the short climb worthwhile. Look back towards Barnstaple in one direction and down the estuary in the other.

The traffic-free setting means families can concentrate on riding together instead of dealing with cars. The route is also easy to follow. The Braunton Countryside Centre highlights the extensive traffic-free cycling available on the Tarka Trail.

Wildlife and estuary views along the way

One of the pleasures of riding this section regularly is that it never looks exactly the same twice. At high tide, the water changes the character of the estuary; at low tide, exposed mudflats create different feeding areas for birds and other wildlife. Both are beautiful, so we would not choose the ride solely around the tide.

The trail stays close to the estuary for much of the journey. Rather than racing to the destination, take time to look across the water and stop at the viewpoints. You can also check our Tarka Trail map before setting out.

Why children enjoy Fremington Quay

Fremington Quay is an ideal family turnaround point because the break feels like part of the adventure. Children can explore the pirate-ship play park and choose an ice cream, while the café serves coffee, lunch and the sort of enormous cakes that are very welcome after a ride.

There are benches near the park if you would rather bring a picnic. The quay can become busy during weekends, school holidays and warm weather, so allow enough time and keep an eye on younger children around other trail users. At high tide, some visitors also bring a small or telescopic fishing rod to enjoy a little fishing during the stop.

Choosing bikes for your family

All our bikes can handle this surfaced section, but hybrids and electric bikes are the most popular choices. Hybrids are comfortable and straightforward, while e-bikes are particularly helpful for adults who have not cycled recently or for mixed-ability groups that want to stay together.

For younger passengers, we can provide children’s bikes, child seats, tagalongs and trailers. Dogs do not have to miss the day either—dog trailers are available subject to availability. You can see the options on our bike-hire page, and we recommend booking accessories ahead during busy periods.

A ride that can rebuild your cycling confidence

We love seeing the smiling faces when customers return after a great day out. Recently, a lady told us the ride had been an unforgettable day. She had not ridden a bike for 30 years and was understandably a little unsure at first. After we fitted her to an e-bike and gave her a short lesson, she cruised down the trail with ease.

Stories like that are why this route works so well as an introduction—or reintroduction—to cycling. It is scenic and rewarding without demanding technical skills or lots of climbing. We fit each rider carefully, explain the controls and make sure everyone feels comfortable before leaving.

What is included with your hire?

Helmets are included free of charge. Every bike has a bottle cage, locks are available, and we provide at least one saddlebag kit per group with essentials for a minor puncture or adjustment.

We also have pannier bags available at no extra cost. They are useful if you want to carry extra layers, children’s supplies or a picnic for the benches at Fremington Quay.

Local tips before you set off

  • Prepare for the wind. It can funnel along the estuary, even when conditions feel calm at the start.
  • Dress in layers. The open waterside sections can feel cooler than Braunton.
  • Allow time at the quay. The play park, café and estuary views can easily turn a quick stop into the highlight of the outing.
  • Bring water and snacks. Even an easy ride can make children surprisingly hungry.
  • Keep the group together. Agree to wait at junctions and ride at the pace of the least-confident cyclist.
  • Do not worry about the tide. High and low tide offer different views and wildlife.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Tarka Trail suitable for children?

Yes. This traffic-free, mostly flat section is one of our most popular family recommendations. The right setup depends on each child’s age and confidence, so we can help you choose between a children’s bike, child seat, tagalong or trailer.

How long does it take to cycle from Braunton to Fremington Quay?

Allow approximately 45–60 minutes each way at a comfortable pace. Add extra time for wildlife stops and a proper break at Fremington Quay.

Do we need to bring helmets?

No. Helmets are included free with Waterside bike hire, although you are welcome to bring your own.

Can we bring a dog?

Yes. Dog trailers are available subject to availability, so booking ahead is recommended.

What happens if we have not cycled for years?

Let us know when you arrive. We will help with bike choice and fitting, and can give you a short introduction before you join the trail. An e-bike can make the return to cycling feel much more approachable.
